BARBARA CHRISTOL Geometry and Wool
Barbara Christol, a young visual artist from Nîmes, creates paintings that blend geometry and architecture. She creates her works using wool.

“Lines underpin my work, and my taste for geometry has existed since I was very young. I like the idea that with simple shapes, circles, squares, we can create a city in perspective with its effects of depth,” explains artist Barbara Christol. In residence at the Révolution college in Nîmes and beyond the workshops with students on the theme of “Art, Nature and Architecture,” she continues her series, Paysages Intérieurs, visible in her immense studio from June.
For her paintings of all sizes (from 5cm to 260cm on each side), she uses a mixture of acrylic and graphite. Her tools? Compasses (she has forty of them, of all sizes!), plumb bobs… all traditional. Her work is strongly influenced by the Nîmes region. “From childhood, we are immersed in this world of stones and ruins. I create my works with this framework,” she says.
Giant blanket
“My creations are based around three axes: painting, drawing and weaving, coupled with photography,” she continues. “I knit wool with my arms and occupy various places with a giant blanket. I stretch the threads across rooms or on furniture… Soft, sky blue (always the same), the wool challenges and changes the way we look at and perceive space.”
Barbara Christol explores figurative drawing. Her works include works on paper and canvas, such as the little rabbit, inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Fascinating.
